"Bancarotta”: broken bench

bancarotta, broken benchSince its construction, around 1550, the Loggia del Mercato Nuovo (Lodge of the New Market), better known as “Loggia del Porcellino” (Lodge of the piglet) for the famous Tacca’s bronzed fountain that represent a boar (not a piglet!), was used for a market therefore it was always crowded with sellers and buyers. The merchants who had a conviction of insolvency by the Court of the Bargello and therefore were declared "failed", were brought in chains in the Loggia in the hour of greatest attendance. Here the soldiers provided to publicly break the work bench, the “banco”, on which the prisoner held his daily work : this was called its " Bancarotta”, broken benchsimpatica canaglia via d'ancona firenzesimpatica canaglia via d'ancona firenzesimpatica canaglia via d'ancona firenze,  to establish definitively that the condemned, as "failed" , could no longer treat any commercial activities in the city .
